Governor Announces that New Hampshire
Has Offered to Host 500 Hurricane Katrina Evacuees
CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch announced today that New Hampshire has offered to
host 500 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency requested this weekend that New Hampshire
consider hosting evacuees.
"New Hampshire stands ready to assist in any way we can our fellow Americans
whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina," Gov. Lynch said.
"I am confident that people of our great state will pitch in to warmly
welcome and assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina."
The evacuees will initially be welcomed at the Air National Guard base at Pease
International Tradeport. The state is working with FEMA to coordinate an arrival
date. FEMA has said the evacuees may need housing for up to six months.
Gov. Lynch met today with representatives from the state's Office of Emergency
Management, Health and Human Services, Education, Safety, Administrative Services,
Employment Security, Justice, National Guard, and Transportation, as well as
the American Red Cross, to begin developing a comprehensive plan for the arrivals,
including:
It is expected that the federal government will pay for
most services.
"As we receive more information from the federal government about the needs
of these evacuees, I will be asking the people of New Hampshire to help provide
assistance," Gov. Lynch said. "As they have throughout this disaster,
I am confident that our people will pull together to support the evacuees."

Employment for Evacuees
State Commissioner encourages evacuees arriving in New Hampshire to file for
Disaster Unemployment Assistance as soon as possible
Dept. of Employment Security will help them file and obtain other vital supportive
services
CONCORD—Richard S. Brothers, Commissioner of the Department of Employment
Security (NHES) is encouraging Hurricane Katrina evacuees temporarily living
in New Hampshire to file for Disaster Unemployment Assistance or regular Unemployment
Compensation. He stated, “I encourage these individuals to visit the nearest
office of NH Employment Security to receive assistance to open a claim for Disaster
Unemployment Assistance (DUA) or to get help with an existing claim. We have
assisted and will continue to assist each person individually in this process
to determine eligibility for either regular Unemployment Compensation or Disaster
Unemployment Assistance. The first step is to visit the office nearest you.”
If an individual isn’t eligible for regular Unemployment Compensation,
they will be assisted to file for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). DUA
is based on wages from the most recent tax year, 2004. Their claims will be
identified as “Claim resulted from Hurricane Katrina”. These claims
will be sent as appropriate to Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana, through an
interstate system specifically set up for each state to process them. Commissioner
Brothers stated, “Please do not delay visiting the office, even if identification
is not available.” The IRS has posted a phone number for taxpayers affected
by the hurricane that will help them receive a free copy of their tax return
which can be used as identification and wage information for regular Unemployment
and DUA claims at 1-866-562-5227 or http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=147180,00.html
Commissioner Brothers stated further, “We are working in coordination
with the Office of the Governor, the Red Cross, and the NH Office of Emergency
Management. Our office staff in each of our 13 locations across the State is
committed and ready to assist with job placement and to offer other assistance,
coordination, and information for vital support which includes, housing, transportation,
food, and other life necessities.” More information is available on NH

UNH Ready To Assist Students On Space-Available Basis. UNH will grant non-degree admission to students who were enrolled in colleges and universities closed because of Hurricane Katrina. Courses are available on a space-available basis and students will work with an advisor in the University Advising and Career Center or one of our schools and colleges prior to registration to ensure that courses are appropriate based on both prior coursework and readiness for those courses.
The university will work with students to accommodate the financial dislocation that has resulted from the storms. Although the university is not in a position to waive tuition, it will modify deadlines for students affected by the hurricane to allow sufficient time to sort out the various financial issues associated with enrollment.
Other USNH Campuses Also Assisting
Staff at the UNH, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, and Granite State College have already been in contact with some displaced students who want to continue their studies.
